humbly, The new american novel
Borderline, the premiere novel by Jack-Henry Day is a modern stream of consciousness style retelling of six of the intimate relationships of protagonist Clark Queen's life.
The story, framed by an ongoing conversation between Clark and an unknown party, explores themes of internalized homophobia, mental health stigmas, and the objective truth of everyone's inherent subjectivity. Clark is twelve upon the novel's opening, mere minutes from having his first sexual experience with another boy. By the story's conclusion Clark is on the brink of the real world and only slightly more aware than when he begun this journey. Borderline is not necessarily a coming of age novel but a unapologetic look at the similarities, differences, and perplexities people face at every age.
